What Is INSERT Molding?

At TenX, our insert injection molding process uses pre-formed components (inserts) that are placed into a mold prior to the injection of plastic. Insert molding can integrate materials, such as metal, ceramics or other rigid materials that may be difficult to mold directly. This enhances the reliability, functionality and performance of the final product, even in high-stress or harsh environments. It can also imbue parts with properties like electrical conductivity or heat resistance.

As a full-service manufacturing partner, our team can deliver high-volume, high-quality production runs of insert injection molded parts that deliver maximum strength and performance.

Benefits and Considerations of INSERT MOLDING

  • Enhanced Structural Integrity: By incorporating metal or other rigid inserts into the molded part, the strength and durability of the component are significantly improved.
  • Improved Resilience: Injecting plastic that can withstand high temperatures around an inserted component improves the overall durability.
  • Design Flexibility: Various materials — like metals, ceramics or other plastics — can be  molded into a single part.
  • Cost Efficiency: Reducing the number of components needed in assembly streamlines production and cuts down on errors, resulting in material cost and labor savings.
  • Consistent Quality: Automation ensures consistent quality and precision in the final products, which is crucial for industries where tolerances are tight.
  • Prototyping Challenges: As with over molding, insert injection molding prototyping and small runs can be cost prohibitive.
  • Precise Tooling: Precise shaping for tooling is often needed, since the insert will often need to be suspended within the mold during production.
  • Customization Can Cost You: If the parts require a custom insert, the cost and time required to produce your parts could go up.
